CPR Can Save a Life

It is reported that 90% of people who experience cardiac arrest, will die before making it to the hospital.  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) administered in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest can increase chances of survival by two to three times!  According to CPR Headquarters, in addition to cardiac arrest, CPR can also be a life-saving method for other medical emergencies like electric shock, allergic reactions, drug overdoses, suffocation, drowning and heart attacks.  The best part about CPR is that almost anyone can learn how to do it and that means better chances of survival for those in an emergency.  The AHA reports that children as young as age 9 have learned and retained the skills of proper implementation of CPR.  Unfortunately, however, less than 20% of Americans are equipped to perform proper CPR in the event of an emergency.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends two steps to saving a life byway of hands-only CPR:

  • Call 9-1-1
  • Push hard and fast.

One of the most important components to remember about hands-only CPR is that one person may not be enough.  The AHA states that the person doing the CPR should push the chest at a consistent for vigorous rate of 100 – 120 compressions per minute.  Again, one person may not be enough; human beings get tired, and if you’re administering CPR correctly, your arms and body will inevitably slow and lose vigor.  For this reason, it’s important to have multiple CPR trained people ready and available to trade out and take over to keep the hands-only CPR pace consistent, powerful and fast.

The key component of consistency is crucial because the compressions can’t slow or rest and still be life-saving.  A creative approach to help keep the administrator on point is to put their compressions to the timing of music.  This video clip below provided by the American Heart Association is both entertaining and informative on using music to keep compressions hard, fast and steady.

If the 70s aren’t necessarily your thing, the New York-Presbyterian Hospital provides a list of songs (which you can play live from their site) that all have 100-120 BPM and therefor go perfectly with providing CPR compressions.  This is a terrific resource for practicing your CPR skills and applying the hands-only method repeatedly and enjoyably until perfected for an emergency.

Does proActive Safety Services Offer Private Training Courses?

We specialize in delivering private training courses. In fact, we have sold more custom training courses that OSHA Outreach Training courses. Complete custom classes can get pretty expensive. However, it is easy to add in photos of your facilities, videos you may currently use, or any other custom content you feel is necessary.
