Winter Road Safety Kit Checklist

Better to be safe than sorry when winter weather strikes. Have a Winter Road Safety Kit in your automobile. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management and NOAA recommend the following in their Winter Road Safety Kit Checklist:

  • Bag of sand or kitty litter for traction
  • Blankets / Sleeping bag
  • Bottles of water
  • Candles
  • Cell phone and automobile charger
  • Empty tin can to melt snow for drinking water
  • Extra clothing to keep dry
  • Extra washer fluid
  • First-aid kit and any necessary medications
  • Flares or roadway detectors
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Help. sign / brightly colored strip of cloth to tie to antenna or hang out of your window
  • High-calorie, non-perishable food like granola bars, dried fruit, beef jerky, nuts (if need, be sure to have a can opener)
  • Jumper cables
  • Lighter/waterproof matches
  • Road Maps
  • Sharp knife
  • Small shovel
  • Tissue paper/paper towels
  • Tool kit
  • Tow rope
  • Windshield scrapers and brush
