Confined Space Awareness Training

Did you know that every year over 100 people die from confined space entries in the United States and that over 40% of those fatalities involve attempted rescuers? Due to the colorless and odorless nature of the hazards associated with confined space entry, working in or around confined spaces can be extremely dangerous and even deadly! Confined Space Awareness Frequently Asked Questions:

Is confined space awareness training required by law?

Yes. OSHA requires employers to train any employees who may conduct work or activities in or around a confined space.  There are various types of confined space training that may apply depending on the task.

How long is my confined space awareness certification good for?

Confined space awareness certification is good for two years.  Depending on the certification you receive, based on the training you need, some certifications could last for up to three years (with annual review).

What is Confined Space Awareness Training?

Confined Space Awareness Training is a two-hour course that covers such topics as identifying the different types of confined spaces, risks of working unprotected in confined spaces, written confined space plans, determining whether you are facing a confined space on a jobsite and more.  This course is about awareness and does not certify for confined space entry or permit-required confined spaces.

How do I know which confined space course I need?

Confined Space Awareness Training is a two-hour course that covers such topics as identifying the different types of confined spaces, risks of working unprotected in confined spaces, written confined space plans, determining whether you are facing a confined space on a jobsite and more.  This course is about awareness and does not certify for confined space entry or permit-required confined spaces.  Entry and Permit-Required trainings require 16 hours and beyond for certification.  Additional training beyond this may also be required for certain permit-require spaces as well.

How do I know if my job requires general industry guidelines or construction guidelines?

Anytime you are doing construction work that involves renovating a structure or building a new one, for example, you are in the window for construction confined spaces and construction rules apply.

How do I know if I’m facing a confined space?

OSHA defines confined spaces as any space that has limited means of entry and/or exit, is large enough for workers to enter, areas that may be difficult to enter or exit from (especially in the event of an emergency), spaces not intended for continuous occupancy, etc.  These might look like attics and crawl spaces, manholes, tanks, vaults, pump stations, manure pits, ductwork, tunnels, water supply towers, sewers, vats and much more.

Am I really in danger if I just enter a confined space one time for a quick job?

Yes.  Because confined spaces can have significantly reduced oxygen levels, can expose workers to other hazards like exposed electrical wiring, hazardous chemical releases and may be difficult to exit from especially during emergencies, confined spaces should always be trained for, planned for thoroughly and handled with great caution and care to prevent injury or death.

How can I prepare myself and/or my workers to handle confined spaces safely?

The best way to prepare for jobs that involve confined spaces is by getting educated in a Confined Space Awareness Course.  From this class, you may decide that you or your workers may need additional training for a more in-depth experience into safe and efficient navigation in and around confined spaces.
