Fire Extinguisher Awareness Training Frequently Asked Questions:
Is Fire Extinguisher Training required by law?
Employers are required to train employees on fire extinguisher safety specifically when there is a risk of chemical or welding fires onsite. Although OSHA does not require hands-on formal classroom training to take place for some settings, employers must provide workers with instructions OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.157(g)(1):
An employer must: Provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage firefighting. An employer must provide this education when employees are first hired and once a year thereafter.
Just having a fire extinguisher on the premise is not enough. If no one knows how to properly use the tool, it is useless. Not only how to use the standard fire extinguisher is important, but how to select and use proper extinguishers for the type of fire being faced is crucial.
