Who Needs EPA Lead Renovator Certification?

The RRP Rule applies to anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. That includes general contractors, remodelers, painters, window and siding installers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, property managers, and maintenance staff. If your work disturbs more than six square feet of interior paint or twenty square feet of exterior paint, you need a Certified Renovator on site. How to Get Certified in Two Steps

First, register your company as an EPA Certified Firm at epa.gov/lead/getcertified. EPA firm approval can take up to 90 days, so apply early. Our Lead Renovator Training Initial course covers 8 classroom modules and 11 hands-on skill sets in one focused, fast-paced day. This is not a day of reading slides. Our instructors keep the room moving, ask questions, share real job-site stories, and get you on your feet practicing the work.

Classroom Modules

We start with why lead-based paint matters, including the current health effects of lead exposure and how to protect yourself, your crew, and your customers. Next we take a clear, plain-language walk through the EPA RRP regulations and what they mean for your day-to-day work. From there we cover interior containment, exterior containment, lead-safe work practices, and cleanup. We close the classroom portion with recordkeeping, how to document cleaning verification correctly, and how to use the Steps Guide to train your non-certified workers back at the shop.

Hands-On Skill Sets

The hands-on portion is where our students tell us the material really clicks. You will test for lead-based paint using an EPA-recognized test kit and learn how to take a proper paint chip sample. You will remove and cover furniture, set up interior containment, build a barrier entry door, put on and remove personal protective equipment, and establish exterior containment. Once the work area is set, you will practice cleanup, visual inspection, and the cleaning verification procedure. Then you will bag the waste, goose-neck the bag, and take down doors, signs, and perimeters the right way. After a short review, you take the exam.
