Lockout Tagout Training Frequently Asked Questions:

Is Lockout Tagout Training required by law?

Yes. OSHA requires employee training for all workers under the umbrella of the Lockout Tagout Standard.  Training must cover three areas: aspects of the employer’s energy control program; elements of the energy control procedure relevant to the employee’s duties or assignment; and the various requirements of the OSHA standards related to lockout/tagout (Source: OSHA).

How long is my Lockout Tagout certification good for?

Lockout Tagout certification is good for two years from the date of certification.  Refresher courses are available and are required when job assignment changes are made, when equipment or processes present new hazards, when energy control procedures change and/or when knowledge or use of the program is inadequate.

What is Lockout Tagout?

As defined by OSHA, Lockout Tagout refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the unexpected energization or startup of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities.

The OSHA standard for The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147, addresses the practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment, thereby preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees perform servicing and maintenance activities. The standard outlines measures for controlling hazardous energies—electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, and other energy sources (Source: OSHA).

What is covered in Lockout Tagout Training?

In our two-hour Lockout Tagout Training, the content must cover three areas: aspects of the employer’s energy control program; elements of the energy control procedure relevant to the employee’s duties or assignment; and the various requirements of the OSHA standards related to lockout/tagout (Source: OSHA).

Training looks at three groups of impacted employees to be trained in specific areas.  Authorized employees must be able to recognize hazardous energy sources, be aware of the type and amount of energy in the workplace, and methods and means of energy isolation.  Affected employees are trained in purpose and use of Lockout Tagout procedures.  Other employees in the area are training in procedures and prohibition on restarting.  This is just a summary of what is covered.

Authorized and affected employee retraining is required when job assignments change, when equipment or processes present new hazards, if energy control procedures change and/or if knowledge and implementation of the program is inadequate.

How do I know if I need Lockout Tagout training?

Anyone who operates, cleans, services, adjusts, and repairs machinery or equipment should be aware of the hazards associated with that machinery and should receive Lockout Tagout Training. Any powered machinery or electrical equipment that can move in a way that would put people in danger is a hazard that can be prevented by following locking or tagging procedures. Failure to lockout or tag power sources on equipment can result in electrocutions, amputations, and other serious-sometimes fatal-accidents.

How do I know if I’m at risk for hazardous energy releases?

You may be at risk if you operate, clean, service, adjust, and repair machinery or equipment that can move in a way that would put people in danger.  Failure to lockout or tag power sources on equipment can result in electrocutions, amputations, and other serious-sometimes fatal-accidents.

How can I prevent danger or death from hazardous energy releases?

The best way to prevent exposure is by getting educated in our Lockout Tagout Training Course on preventative methods of exposure and by following occupational safety measures for locking and tagging.
