EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule Individual Certification

EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule Individual Certification

EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule Individual Certification is required for any contractor working in target housing or child-occupied facilities.  Target housing is any house built prior to 1978.  Although there are a couple exceptions to target housing.  We feel the best-practice is to treat any environment where lead-based paint is found as toxic and to contain the area during any renovation.  Most importantly, we recommend a visual inspection and a cleaning verification procedure for any area containing lead-based paint that was disturbed.  Child-Occupied facilities are any commercial or residential property where a child or children under the age of 6 will inhabit the property for more than 3 hours a day, 6 hours a week, or 60 hours in a year.  If you are working in target housing or child-occupied facilities your firm needs to certified, and at least one contractor has to be a certified renovator.

All renovations must be directed by Certified Renovators. To become a Certified Renovator, you must complete an EPA-approved 8-hour training course in lead-safe work practices taught by an EPA-accredited training provider. The course completion certificate serves to certify renovators and no application fee is required.  Successful completion of this course will result in a 5-year certification as a Certified Renovator. To maintain certification, Certified Renovators must take an EPA-approved 4-hour refresher course taught by an EPA-accredited training provider, before their certification expires.

States, territories and tribes may establish requirements for individual renovators working within their jurisdictions. Be sure to determine if your state, territorial or tribal government has additional regulations that may affect what you must do and where you may work.  If you have questions about your state, or the state program in your state please feel free to email sales@pasafety.com, or dial 877-209-9648 for more information.
